Proposed baseball field in Chatham, Ont. gets approval, but some concerns raised

June 25, 2024  By Turf & Rec

The proposal for a new regulation-size baseball field in Chatham, Ont. became the hot topic for discussion at Chatham-Kent council’s meeting on Monday.

Windsor News Today reports that council voted 12-6 to approve the Field of Dreams committee’s fundraising initiative as well as the field’s location and sending design work costs to budget. However, some councillors noted the ball diamond’s location is the current site of a soccer field at Rotary Park and would impact local soccer’s growth. One councillor thought the closing of a soccer field to accommodate a baseball diamond could pit user groups against one another.

Another councillor suggested the Field of Dreams committee be permitted to begin its $2.5-million fundraising initiative, but he added the proposal was rushed and should include feedback from all groups.
