The City of Airdrie, Alta. is hoping the local school board will pony up $600,000 toward the cost of an artificial turf sports field at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park.
Airdrie City View reports the $4-million project will provide more than 615 playing hours for such sports as soccer, football and field hockey, and will provide opportunities for more than 13,000 local students.
In making its pitch for school board funding, the municipality told trustees that artificial turf will reduce the number of injuries associated with natural turf playing surfaces.
For now, the city’s request for funding was accepted as information by the board. The official opening of the new field is expected for early September.
